Week of October 4, 2010Greetings from Room 203 at Berthoud Elementary School! This week in our second grade gifted class we met our new Junior Great Books and listened to the first reading of the story "The Happy Lion". The story is about a friendly French lion who has an unusual adventure in his hometown. The children have a homework assignment for our next class meeting: They are to read the story with someone at home and discuss the questions that are embedded in the story. They also will be writing two personal questions they have about the story. Each child has an index card in his/her folder to use to write these questions, as well as sticky notes to take notes while reading. There will be an informational meeting for everyone interested in Odyssey of the Mind on Monday, October 11 at 6:30 in our classroom. This program is a great opportunity for your gifted child to build thinking and collaborative skills in a fun environment! We will not have class next week due to Parent/Teacher Conferences. Thank you for sharing your special child with me!
Week of 11-1-10 Greetings from Room 208 at BES! We have enjoyed our reading and discussion of The Happy Lion in our Junior Great Books! The children wrote "burning" questions about the story and offered those for discussion to the group. The story generated a conversation about one's perspective on a given situation and how that can change the behavior and attitudes of those involved. Our small group is delightful and our time flies by each week. Thank you for sharing your special child with me!
